Empire Arcade

c1967. View of the interior of the Empire Arcade looking down towards the exit to Cross Arcade. Shops visible include Henry Fields and Rediffusion. The Empire Arcade was formerly the site of the Empire Theatre, which had been opened on 25th February 1898. After many years as a popular music hall it closed in 1961 and was demolished in 1962. The arcade was opened in 1964 but unlike many of Leeds' historical arcades it was shortlived. It was to be redeveloped to house the Harvey Nichols store which opened in October 1996 as part of the prestigious Victoria Quarter.

Memories

I REMEMBER THIS ARCADE BEING OPENED IN 1964. WE WERE ASKED TO BE " EXTRAS " BY THE LOCAL PAPER. WE WERE TOLD TO WALK BACK AND FORTH WHILE THEY TOOK PHOTOS. WE WERE PAID IN VOUCHERS AND I SPENT MINE ON BEATLES SINGLES!
