Star Cinema, Glenthorpe Crescent, York Road

11 May 1938. View shows the Star Cinema situated on Glenthorpe Crescent off York Road, which is showing the film "The Bride wore red" starring Joan Crawford. This cinema replaced the Victoria Picture Hall which had been built on the site of Coach Hall Farm in 1912 but was demolished in 1937. The replacement 'Star' was situated on an adjoining plot as York Road was widened at that time. The architect of the new cinema was James Brodie, the seating capacity was 1,286, (870 on the ground floor and a gallery with 416; it opened on 21st February 1938 showing Ronald Colman in "Lost Horizon". This is the front entrance with a sweet shop to the right. The building still exists and is now being used as a gym.
