Soldiers Field, Roundhay Park
2003 This extensive area of grassland to the immediate south of Roundhay Park has long been known as Soldiers Field. It was used up to and during the First World War by local battalions as a muster and parade ground. Robert Blackburn's Olympia aeroplane works on Roundhay Road also used the fields to test his pioneer aircraft. During the Second World War many air-raid shelters were on the site, a number of these are alleged to still remain underground. Now used for recreational sports.
