Grand Arcade

Undated. This photo of the Grand Arcade possibly dates from the early 1960s. The view is looking from the Vicar Lane entrance of the arcade towards New Briggate. On the left, Charlie Gould Ltd. have a dress wear hire service. To the right is the double fronted shop business of Pets and Aquaria Ltd. This shop was popular with children, one window always featuring a litter of kittens or puppies. Inside a selection of small pets and fish were always to be admired. The Grand Arcade was built in 1897 by the New Briggate Arcade Company and named after the nearby Grand Theatre which dates from 1878.

As a child in 1950's I had many pet's from the pet shop. The last one is my cat Jack who I saw in the window as a tiny kitten in 1992 he will be 15 next month. Happy childhood memories.
