Victoria Arcade, Off Headrow
Undated.
A view from the early 1900s showing Victoria Arcade decorated with garlands of flowers and bunting. The shop frontage of Schofield's drapers can be seen to the right. Snowden Schofield opened at no. 1 Victoria Arcade on May 4th 1901. He went on to expand the business into a large department store, eventually taking over the Victoria Arcade which was subsequently demolished in 1959. In the 1980s the whole complex was redeveloped into the Schofields Shopping Centre featuring a smaller Schofields store along with other retailers. This in turn became the Headrow Shopping Centre after Schofields ceased to trade, and has since been renamed The Core.
