New Briggate, Number 54.

View of Jones Sewing Machine shop, with Merrion Street on the left and Grand Arcade to the right. A large crowd of people and horse-drawn vehicles can be seen, perhaps this was a patriotic celebration? The Boer War was being fought, on the shop front is a tribute to Lord Roberts, one of the leading military commanders of the period. Under his portrait is the slogan 'Bravo!' 'Bob's like Jones Sewing Machines, Always Successful'. 'Bobs' was a nickname given to Lord Roberts by poet Rudyard Kipling, who greatly admired his military achievements.
